Year in Review: Best Original Screenplays of 2012

6 Jan

Rant. Rave. Review. 2012More screenplays! I realize that these are probably the least interesting of the Year in Review articles for my casual readers, but to those a bit more dedicated to the film world, these two pieces may give you a chance to enjoy such an underappreciated aspect of filmmaking.

The original screenplay category celebrates imagination and discipline. This may seem contradictory, but it is actually the two most key aspects for any creative writer. A person who conjures characters, back stories, events and even entire worlds for their mind roam free in must execute the most severe of discipline. It is easy to get lost in your own little world, and the best of the best original screenwriters listed below have mastered their imagination and allowed you a peek inside their world.

5. Derek Connolly, Safety Not Guaranteed

4. Martin McDonagh, Seven Psychopaths

3. Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained

2. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, The Cabin in the Woods

1. Rian Johnson, Looper

Honorable Mentions (alphabetized)

-John Gatins, Flight

-Mark Boal, Zero Dark Thirty

-Nicholas Jarecki, Arbitrage

-Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master

-Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom
